Visionary Sustainable Design: Canadian IGC Develops, Anchors Mixed-Use Business Center

Never before has North America seen anything like it. Construction is underway in Alberta, Canada, for a visionary 11-acre sustainable business center anchored by Hole’s Greenhouses & Gardens. The development, called The Enjoy Centre, is planned to be a community of businesses that share Hole’s “belief in environmental sustainability, culture, community and enjoyment.” In addition to approximately 8,200 square feet of leasable space and 4,265 square feet of conference space, the site is being designed to build local ties by providing facilities for special events.

German architect Ernst von Meijenfeldt is helping to guide the sustainable construction, designed to ensure that “hill and house live together” on the undulating landscape. LEED construction methods are being employed to reduce the development’s carbon footprint. To reduce energy demand by a target 20 percent, the latest environmental controls and energy-saving systems will be used. Rainwater will be captured and stored to water nursery stock.

The family owned Canadian IGC plans to operate under a new name, Hole’s Encore, when it relocates from its current St. Albert site to the new property in November, the proposed date for completion.
